THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO
CAR DOG CRATES & SAFETY
What Is a Car Dog Crate?
A car dog crate — also called a crash-tested dog crate, vehicle dog crate, or car kennel — is a purpose-built enclosure designed specifically for safe vehicle transport. Unlike standard indoor crates placed in a car, car dog crates use reinforced aluminum or steel frames, 4-point seatbelt anchoring systems, and impact-absorbing construction tested to withstand the forces of a vehicle collision.
The key difference between a car crate and a standard crate is crash testing. Standard wire crates use stamped steel joints and slide-bolt latches that fail under crash forces. Car crates are tested to 64 mph frontal and 48 mph rear impact standards — the doors stay latched, the frame holds its shape, and the dog remains contained during a collision.
Why Car-Specific Crates Matter
In a 30 mph collision, an unrestrained 60-lb dog becomes a 2,700-lb projectile. A standard wire crate placed in a car provides zero crash protection — the thin-gauge wire bends, the slide-bolt latches pop open, and the crate collapses or ejects the dog. Purpose-built car crates eliminate every one of these failure points.
A crash-tested car crate protects both the dog and the human occupants. The crate contains the dog's mass during deceleration, preventing the dog from impacting the driver or passengers. It also prevents the dog from escaping a damaged vehicle into traffic after an accident — a common and deadly scenario with standard crates.
Choosing Between Back Seat and Cargo Area Placement
Back seat placement is safest for crash protection — the back seat is the most protected area of the vehicle, surrounded by crumple zones on all sides. Cargo area placement gives your dog more room and is easier for loading/unloading large dogs.
For SUVs, the cargo area behind the rear seats with a cargo barrier is a good compromise — the barrier adds a secondary containment layer. For sedans, the back seat is usually the only option that fits a crate. Always anchor the crate to the vehicle — seatbelt pass-throughs for back seat, cargo tie-downs for the cargo area. Never place a crate on the front seat — front airbags deploy with lethal force against a crate.
Car Crate Sizing for Your Vehicle
Measure your vehicle's cargo area or back seat dimensions before ordering a car crate. For cargo areas: measure the width between wheel wells, the depth from tailgate to back seat, and the height from floor to ceiling. For back seats: measure the seat width and depth, and the floor-to-ceiling height.
Our sloping car crate is specifically designed for hatchbacks and wagons where the roofline angles down toward the tailgate — the angled rear panel matches the slope so you don't waste vertical space. For two-dog SUV setups, measure whether two crates fit side-by-side between the wheel wells with at least 1" clearance on each side for airflow.
