A collapsible dog crate — also called a folding dog crate or fold-flat crate — is a crate whose panels hinge inward to collapse the entire structure to a flat rectangle for storage and transport. When set up, a collapsible crate functions identically to a permanent crate. When collapsed, it reduces to a 5–7 inch thick profile that fits under a bed, in a closet, or in a car trunk.

Collapsible crates come in three materials: wire (most common, most secure), soft-sided (lightest, least secure), and plastic (middle ground). Soft-sided collapsible crates often include carry bags that make them easier to transport — use the bag to keep the crate clean and prevent the frame from snagging on other items. For wire crates, attach the tray to the outside of the collapsed crate with a bungee cord so they travel as one unit.
