THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO
METAL DOG CRATES
What Is a Metal Dog Crate?
A metal dog crate — also called a solid metal kennel, welded steel crate, or heavy-duty metal crate — is a rigid enclosure built from welded steel, stainless steel, or aluminum tubing. Unlike wire crates that use thin gauge wire in a grid pattern, metal crates use solid round or square tubing that is welded at every joint, creating a structure that resists bending, prying, and impact far beyond what wire or plastic can withstand.
Metal dog crates are available in standard steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and powder-coated configurations. Standard steel crates offer the best value for indoor use. Stainless steel crates provide lifetime corrosion resistance for any environment. Aluminum crates deliver metal-grade strength at near-wire-crate weight. Powder-coated steel crates add a thick, chip-resistant finish for enhanced durability and aesthetics.
Metal Types: Steel vs. Stainless vs. Aluminum
Standard welded steel is the most affordable metal crate material — strong, rigid, and effective for indoor use where rust exposure is minimal. The coating (paint or electroplating) protects against corrosion, but scratches or chips can expose bare steel to moisture. Powder-coated steel adds a thicker, more durable finish that resists chipping, scratching, and UV damage significantly better than standard paint.
Stainless steel (304 grade) is the premium choice — virtually rust-proof, scratch-resistant, and maintenance-free. The chromium in the alloy creates a self-healing oxide layer that prevents corrosion even in wet, humid, or saltwater environments. Aluminum is naturally corrosion-proof and weighs 40% less than steel, making it the best choice when portability matters but wire-crate strength isn't enough. The tradeoff is that aluminum is softer than steel and can dent more easily under extreme force.
When to Choose a Metal Crate
Metal crates are the right choice when standard wire or plastic crates aren't strong enough. If your dog bends wire crate bars, breaks out of plastic crates, or has destructive chewing behavior that compromises lighter crate materials, a welded metal crate provides the security level you need. Metal crates are also ideal for outdoor use, kenneling facilities, and multi-dog households where durability and longevity justify the higher upfront cost.
The tradeoff is weight and price. Metal crates are heavier than wire or plastic (except aluminum models) and cost 2–4x more than equivalent wire crates. They don't fold flat for storage. For dogs that are already crate-trained and don't test their crate's limits, a wire or plastic crate is usually sufficient and more practical. Metal crates solve a specific problem — when you need maximum containment strength and long-term durability.
