THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO
PLASTIC DOG CRATES

What Is a Plastic Dog Crate?

A plastic dog crate — also called a hard-sided crate, plastic kennel, or den crate — is a two-piece molded plastic enclosure with a steel wire door. The top and bottom halves snap or bolt together, creating a solid, enclosed space with ventilation grilles on the sides. Plastic crates provide a more den-like environment than wire crates, which many dogs find calming.

Plastic dog crates are available in standard, double-door, and heavy-duty configurations. Standard plastic crates use snap clips to join the shell halves — adequate for everyday home use. IATA-compliant plastic crates use metal bolts and nuts instead of snap clips — required for airline travel. Heavy-duty plastic crates use thicker shells with steel-reinforced doors for dogs that need more containment than standard plastic provides.

Why Choose Plastic Over Wire?

Plastic crates provide a more enclosed, den-like environment that many dogs prefer — the solid walls create a visual barrier that reduces anxiety triggers and helps dogs feel secure. They're lighter than equivalent wire crates, easier to clean (smooth plastic interior vs. wire crevices), and many are airline-approved out of the box.

The tradeoff is less ventilation than wire and no fold-flat storage. For travel, vet visits, and anxious dogs, plastic is often the better choice. For home use where ventilation and storage flexibility matter, wire crates are typically preferred. For dogs that need both — a plastic crate for travel and a wire crate for home — we offer bundle pricing.

Plastic Crate Maintenance

Plastic crates are easier to maintain than wire crates because the smooth interior has no crevices for dirt, hair, and bacteria to hide in. Snap the two shell halves apart (no tools needed) and wash with warm soapy water. For odor removal, white vinegar solution is effective and pet-safe.

Avoid harsh chemicals that can degrade the plastic over time. Check the steel door latch mechanism monthly — lubricate the latch spring with silicone spray if it becomes stiff. Replace ventilation grille caps if they crack or break, as broken grilles create sharp edges. Store plastic crates indoors away from direct sunlight — UV exposure degrades plastic faster than any other factor.

Plastic Dog Crate Sizing

Plastic dog crate sizing follows the same measurement rules as wire crates: measure your dog from nose to tail base and add 2–4 inches for length; measure from floor to top of head (standing) and add 2–4 inches for height. However, plastic crate interior dimensions are typically 1–2 inches smaller than the labeled size because the plastic shell is thicker than wire.

Always check the interior dimensions listed on our product pages, not just the labeled crate size. A "36-inch" plastic crate typically has an interior length of 34–35 inches. If your dog measures 34 inches nose-to-tail, a 36" plastic crate may be too tight — size up to a 40" model.
