THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO
TRUCK BED DOG KENNELS
What Is a Truck Bed Dog Kennel?
A truck bed dog kennel — also called a dog crate for truck, pickup truck dog crate, or truck dog box — is a secure, weather-resistant enclosure engineered specifically for mounting in the bed of a pickup truck. Unlike indoor crates adapted for vehicle use, truck bed dog kennels are built from the ground up for highway speeds, weather exposure, road vibration, and the unique dimensions of truck beds.
Truck bed dog kennels feature mounting systems (stake pocket bolts or tie-down anchors) that secure the crate to the truck bed, ventilation designs that provide airflow while deflecting rain at speed, and corrosion-resistant materials that survive exposure to rain, snow, UV, and road salt. The best truck bed kennels use powder-coated aluminum or marine-grade aluminum — not bare steel or chrome-plated wire that rusts within a season of outdoor use.
Mounting and Safety
A loose dog crate in a truck bed is a projectile during hard braking. At 30 mph, a 50-lb kennel with a 70-lb dog generates over 3,600 lbs of force in a sudden stop — enough to break through a cab window. Proper mounting isn't optional. Stake pocket mounting is the gold standard — it bolts the kennel frame directly to your truck's built-in stake pocket holes (the square holes along the top rail) with no drilling required. Our truck kennels include stake pocket hardware for Ford, Chevy, Ram, Toyota, and Nissan trucks.
Ratchet strap mounting through the kennel's tie-down anchor points and the truck bed's cleats is the second-best option — use two straps minimum, crossing them in an X pattern for lateral stability. J-hook bungee cords are never acceptable — they stretch under load and fail at the exact moment you need them. Always test your mounting system with a hard brake in an empty parking lot before loading your dog.
Truck Bed Sizing: Full-Size vs. Mid-Size
Measure your truck bed's interior dimensions, not the manufacturer's advertised bed length. Bed liners reduce interior width by 1–2 inches per side. Wheel well intrusions narrow the usable width at the rear of the bed. If you run a toolbox, measure the remaining bed length behind it. For two-dog setups, two 36" kennels side by side require at least 48" of bed width — this fits full-size trucks but not most mid-size trucks.
Full-size trucks (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) have beds 50–52" wide and 67–79" long depending on cab and bed configuration. They fit any single kennel up to 48" and most double kennel setups. Mid-size trucks (Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, Frontier) have beds 41–42" wide and 60–73" long. They fit single kennels up to 42" in the long bed or 36" in the short bed, but side-by-side double setups typically won't fit.
Weather Protection for Truck Bed Dog Kennels
Open-ventilation truck bed dog kennels provide excellent airflow during motion but limited protection from driving rain, snow, or extreme sun when parked. For cold-weather transport, an insulated crate cover blocks wind while retaining body heat — critical for dogs traveling in freezing temperatures. For rain protection, angled ventilation louvers deflect water at highway speeds better than open mesh or grid panels.
If you regularly transport your dog in extreme weather, consider a truck topper (camper shell) over your truck bed — it creates a sheltered, partially climate-controlled space around the kennel. A topper plus a ventilated kennel is the safest all-weather truck dog transport setup. Without a topper, park in shade whenever possible and never leave a dog in an unventilated truck bed kennel in direct sun above 75°F.
