Medium dogs (26–50 lbs) need a minimum outdoor kennel size of 5' × 10' with 6-foot-high sides. This provides enough room for light exercise, play, and resting. For active breeds like Border Collies and Australian Shepherds that need more movement, size up to 6' × 12' or larger. The height is important — medium dogs in the 40–50 lb range can jump 4-foot panels, so 6-foot height is the minimum safe standard.

Chain-link outdoor kennels are the most popular choice for medium dogs because they're durable, well-ventilated, and cost-effective in larger sizes. Wooden kennels work well for medium dogs in mild climates or when aesthetics matter — they blend with landscaping better than metal. Portable exercise pens work for supervised outdoor time but aren't secure enough for unsupervised use with medium dogs, who have enough strength and determination to tip or push through lightweight panels.

A roof is strongly recommended for any outdoor dog kennel. For medium dogs, the primary reasons are: preventing jumping/climbing escape (most medium dogs can clear a 4-foot panel), providing shade in hot weather, and protecting from rain. A roof also prevents debris from falling into the kennel and deters other animals from entering. Shade cloth roofs block 80–90% of UV while maintaining airflow — better than solid roofs in hot climates.

Position the kennel in a naturally shaded area if possible. Use a shade cloth roof rather than a solid roof — it blocks sun while allowing heat to rise and dissipate. Provide fresh water in a spill-proof, tip-proof bowl or automatic waterer. Place a cooling mat inside the kennel for rest periods. Elevate the kennel floor slightly to allow air circulation underneath. On days above 85°F, limit outdoor kennel time to morning and evening hours. Never leave a dog in an outdoor kennel without shade and water.

They attach to an exterior wall of your house and include a dog door, giving your dog the ability to move between indoor and outdoor space freely.
